Just aquired a bunch of used trex decking from my neighbor. The surface was coming off and trex paid them for the material. I have a redwood deck that is past due for replacing so I am in the process of doing the following with the old material. Install the trex decking upside down to give a better side. Used the removed old dex screws to secure the trex down. Used a air hammer with a phlanishing tip (had to make) to close up all the existing screw holes. You can also close the hole with a hammer. Sanded lightly mostly to remove the old support stains. Applied acrylic grey caulking in the new screw recesses and flatten. Stain with a grey semi-transparent stain with anti-skid additive in the stain. Seems to be working great and since the material cost was nothing I feel it is worth the extra work.
I understand the complaints especially with the cost of the material, but in my case the composite with stain should outlast any wood and no splinters to deal with on the feet.
The redwood (stained regularly) is full of splinters, splits, knots, and valleys.

Guess it just depends on your expectations and cost for materials.

Bob, the best advice I can give you is to seriously consider buying a different house. Short of that, call a local siding contractor to help you identify the existing siding, as well as quantify the current condition, and the cost of replacement.

If you determine that it is LP, call them and they should dispatch an adjuster who will determine how much siding has failed. They may compensate you for the failed portions of siding, but not for that which is eventually going to fail i.e., you can't settle with them twice. You take the first deal and take your chances with the rest.

We are looking at a house that has siding that appears to be LP siding. We know it is a composite wood ....How can you tell if it is LP siding vs. Geogia Pacific or some other company. Obviously it is all "not good" ... but if one is going to try to make a claim with LP ... how does one determine it is their product?

Mark
I am a representative of Trex and would like to answer your question on sanding Trex. If you sand a composite deck, you are removing the extruded surface of the board, thus creating a rough surface. This also is subjecting the product to more mold and mildew. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me directly.

Yes, I find myself in the same situation. I purchased my home in 2006 and was unaware of LP siding. The inspector I used did not advise of the use of LP siding or its defects. I would definitely be interested in filing another class action suit if possible.

We refinish wood decks as part of a larger floor maintenance business, and in so doing see a lot of uglied-out decks made of Trex and other such materials. What happens if you try to sand a meterial like this? I'd like to try it, to see what happens. Has anyone done this?

Hey stupid - If it was such a wonderful product & low maintenance, why are you siting options for stains made by whomever & painting options.
Maintenance isn't the issue. I have no problem with maintenance. The products molds then you clean it then it looks like shit since cleaning as recommended by Trex is a deck brush with a cleaner takes the finish off. That removes the mold for a month or two. Then you have to "clean" it again which removes more of the color. Get my drift. The product sucks.
What are you a trex rep.
